The ska veterans from the Lower Rhine are back! Back in black and white. Thirteen years after their debut album “Prime Cut” , twelve years after their last record “Blue Flame”. In 2000, The Braces started skanking again. With a new lineup. With new songs. And here they are! Soon-to-be anthems like the upbeat “Designer Song” meet melancholic ballads like “Heart Of Sand”. A unique mixture of ska, pop and soul. As The Braces sing in “The Last Song”: “Give it a try”!
Time for a flashback: From the mid-eighties up to 1991, The Braces were one of the most sought-after ska bands around Europe, being part of the first generation in Germany (together with Skaos, The Blue Beat and The Busters). The hype around them grew, when the compilation “Skank – Licensed To Ska” (Link Records/England) became a worldwide success in 1988. The Braces song “Julie, Julie” happened to be one of the highlights of the record. At the “1st International Ska Festival” in London the youngsters shared stages with the likes of Prince Buster and Bim Skala Bim in Dezember 1988. Another classic recording was released the following year, the wide spread “Ska Ska Skandal-Compilation” (Vielklang/Pork Pie), where “Playing Darts” scored lots of points with the thirsty ska crowd. Yet, after four years of extensive touring around Europe and two successful albums The Braces simply stopped playing in 1991. The decision making was helped by their manager who went away with the Braces money and all their contracts.
In 2000, The Braces reformed with singer/guitar player Joachim Uerschels and saxophonist/singer Martin Störkmann being the only original members. Though, the musical underground of Düsseldorf and Cologne proved as a great source for new players like drummer Mattes who used to be in Cologne ska sensation Monkey Shop before. The Braces also found a new excellent collaborator behind the studio desk: Ekki Maas, who has recorded with everyone in Ska from Rude Rich & The High Notes and Doreen Shaffer to Dr. Ring Ding & the Senior Allstars.
The musical backdrop of this recording is a mixture of 60’s and 80’s Ska, with flavours of Soul and Jazz, of Rocksteady and Pop, all centred around eight beautiful new songs. Yes, you will quickly learn what sets The Braces apart from the legions of current ska bands. The others may have the rhythm, but The Braces also have the SONG. Watch yourself or you’ll hum along!

Ska Got Soul - step by step:
“The Designer Song”: A perfect crowd pleaser: At least for everyone who can sing: “Fred Perry’s more my style, Ben Sherman makes a smile.”
“Supergirl vs. Rude Boy”: Ska Pop at its best with Dubs from Ekki.
“Heart Of Sand”: What happens to a boy who falls for a girl even ruder than him? His heart of stone becomes a “Heart Of Sand”.
“I Wish It Were Me”: You like Rocksteady? This one’s for you.
“Jealousy”: This could be a Northern Soul Classic! Rich backings from Steffi and Mattes. Lyricwise on the edge between life and death!
“Keep On Keepin’ On”: Another excursion into the world of Dub, Ekki on the mixing desking, a riddim that could go on and on.
“Skanking In My Lonely Room”: Sweet melancholia rude boy style.
“The Last Song”: Like in the real world, the DJs haven taken over. The man behind the turntables gets the girl in the end.
“Now You’re Here”: This gem was recorded in 1991, beautiful voice from Marion, Tom on the fiddle.
